Stress and Arousal Circadian Rhythms in Smokers and Non-smokers Working Day and Night Shifts
نویسنده
چکیده
Twenty smokers and twenty non-smokers completed a brief Mood State Questionnaire every 2 hours, over one day shift and one night shift. The subjects comprised male police ocers and factory workers, aged 23±57 years. Cigarette smokers reported signi®cantly higher stress levels than non-smokers on both day and night shifts p < 0:05. This con®rms previous ®ndings that smokers are often more stressed than non-smokers. Stress levels varied over time within each shift p < 0:001, but the circadian patterns did not dier between smokers and non-smokers. Thus smoking did not alter circadian mood rhythms, nor did it facilitate stress control. Self-rated levels of arousal showed the archetypal inverted-U pattern over time in both smokers and non-smokers. There was no dierence in mean arousal levels between subgroups, indicating that cigarettes did not lead to greater alertness. The shift time interaction was signi®cant for both stress p < 0:001 and arousal p < 0:003, indicating dierent circadian rhythms during the day shift and the night shift. Finally, while smokers consumed slightly more cigarettes during the night shift than day shift (22.3, 19.4 respectively, p < 0:05), mean stress and arousal levels did not dier between shifts. The implications of these ®ndings for smoking behaviour are discussed. # 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Stress Med., Vol. 13, 91±97 (1997) No. of Figures: 2. No. of Tables: 1. No. of Refs: 25.

Investigation of the effect of unusual work shifts and sleep deprivation on cognitive performance in workers in the automotive industry
Background and aims: The circadian rhythm is one the most important biological rhythms that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and repeats every 24 hours roughly. This 24-hour cycle includes physiological and behavioral rhythms like sleep cycle. Any disruptions in the body’s natural rhythms can cause many problems, such as drowsiness, sleep deprivation, reduced physical activity, and mental functio...

Background & Aim: Hexokinase and pyruvate kinase are two regulatory enzymes of glycolytic pathway in erythrocytes. Increasing evidence suggests that cigarette smoking which produces free radicals and oxidative stress can cause damage to body macromolecules such as proteins and enzymes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the susceptibility of key enzymes of erythrocytes glycolyt...
متن کاملJPET #99010 1 Modafinil and circadian rhythms in Syrian hamsters: Assessment of the chronobiotic potential of a novel alerting compound
In Syrian hamsters, behavioral procedures for inducing arousal (e.g., running in a novel wheel or gentle handling) can shift circadian rhythms when applied during the usual sleep period (‘subjective day’) and can attenuate phase shifts to light during the active period (‘subjective night’). This raises the possibility that drugs that affect behavioral state may have ‘chronobiotic’ potential. We...
متن کاملModeling the Effects of Work Shift on Learning in a Mental Orientation and Rotation Task
Circadian rhythms cause alertness declines at night, producing performance decrements across cognitive domains and tasks. Building on the learning mechanisms for declarative knowledge instantiated in the ACT-R cognitive architecture, this research seeks to explain the effects of circadian rhythms on performance of an orientation task performed repeatedly across two weeks by participants working...

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which have the ability to differentiate into various types of blood cell lines, are usually separate from the bone marrow. But these cells are also present in a small amount in the peripheral blood, and their amounts increase in blood following injection of G-CSF. However, the mechanism involved in moving HSCs under the influence of G-CSF is unknown. The aim of ...
